| | 3/17/05 - Stone Poetry Plays the Leaf & Bean | Bozeman-based
original folk-rock band, Stone Poetry, will perform their enticing
brand of “history rock” at the Leaf and Bean Saturday night, March 19,
from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. The show includes a multimedia component
of vivid imagery projected on silk to enhance several of the
songs. The band recently released their new CD, Into the Great
Unknown, with a well received concert and multimedia show at the Museum
of the Rockies.
Author and music critic Todd Wilkinson recently wrote, “It's safe to
assume that Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their buckskin-clad
Corps of Discovery weren't listening to proto rock-n-roll 200 years ago
as they traveled across the American West. But what if?
Today, add a drum kit to their resurrected spirit, an electric guitar
and bass, maybe a reggae riff here, a bit of Jazz fusion there, perhaps
a Southern rock power chord and a pluck of bluegrass, then meld in a
chorus of imaginative lyrics, and the sweet harmonization of Daniel
Smith and Kate Regan Ciari and what you've got is … well, what you've
got, Pilgrim, is a band unlike any other getting radio play.”
As Todd suggests, Stone Poetry sings songs of exploration and adventure
including songs about the opening of the American west. Other
subjects include Galileo, arctic exploration, information overload in
modern society, and statements on the absurdity of war. A verse
from the CD title track “The Great Unknown” suggests the evocative
quality of the band's “history rock” genre:
“Jim Bridger and me we were boys from Missouri
Watchin' the keelboats sail into the western night
Hearin' the tales of Colter runnin' from the Blackfeet
Knowin' that we'd be as brave confronted with the fight”
After seeing the band in an outdoor concert at Big Sky, a fan wrote:
“Your music reaches the soul - thoughts and sounds that surpass the
present and remind of the past and of possibilities not too far out of
reach. Thank you for sharing your music.”
The band consists of singer/songwriter/guitarist Daniel Smith,
singer/percussionist Kate Regan Ciari, guitarist Dan Krza, bassist
Kevin Loustanou, and percussionist Mark Sullivan.
